122 Brigade reported to 41st Division H.Q. that the tanks were safely in position by 3.20 a.m. but this was not Arnold’s recollection.

As the dawn began to show the ground up, we were still so far behind the front that it seemed certain we could not get there by Zero hour, for the ‘going’ was now simply one succession of shell craters. But the ground was dry and it was thrilling, the way the tank would go down into a crater, stick the upstanding parts of her tracks into the opposite wall and then climb steadily out. The rate of progress was now desperately slow, and I suppose the last thousand yards took two hours to cover. The night had passed like a flash, and I felt for a while a sense of despair: it seemed so impossible that we could arrive in time to be of any use to the infantry. In fact, I thought of sending off a pigeon with a message to say we were behind the hunt. But I reflected that such a message would be useless to anyone and did not send it. Fortunately so, for we were getting nearer to the front line than I thought, and although the infantry were out of the trenches before we arrived, we now made better time, for No Man’s Land had not been so heavily shelled and the going was better.
